For some of us, The Grinch will forever mean Jim Carrey’s amazing acting; but English-speaking children usually know it first as Dr Seuss’ terrifying but moving character from the classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas. What could be said about it that hasn’t been said a thousand times already? That it is unequalled in the genius of its rhymes and heartwarming story? Really, Dr Seuss is the author that comes to mind when people ask us what they should read to learn English. His style is so unique it’s actually become a category of its own! Or maybe we could share a secret with you: as booksellers, we do sometimes feel like The Grinch right before Christmas; wanting to steal trees and gifts so people would forget it was almost time for Santa Claus. It would, let’s admit it, give us a few more precious hours of sleep every night. And yet, just like the Grinch, we are reminded throughout December that Christmas is quite magical after all, thanks to a lovely customer or two (or more!). Maybe we should call those customer Whos? Because they make our hearts grow just the right size in time for Christmas!
